La Kokkerilla
FOOD WITH A STORY TO TELL
Making its second appearance at Pukkelpop, La Kokkerilla is the result of a collaboration with the reception centre in Houthalen-Helchteren and non-profit Rooftoptiger, an Antwerp artist collective that sets up bot artistic and social-artistic projects.
La Kokkerilla is a construction from recycling material with a table that revolves around a kitchen, which occupies centre stage. In the middle there are 10 cooks, all residents at the reception centre in Houthalen-Helchteren. The festivalgoers can sample dishes from a variety of countries, such as börek from Albania, a baked pastry filled with cheese, minced meat or vegetables. There’s tabbouleh from Palestina, a typical salad from the Lebanese kitchen, or biryani, a wonderful rice dish from Iraq often served at special occasions. The menu also includes fergese, kofta and Afghan pastries.
La Kokkerilla is not just about the food: the interaction between cook and customer is just as important. Human contact between strangers whose paths in life intersect at this junction, each with their own story and background.
The 10 cooks and their unique story can be found right next to Lift every day between 4 and 8pm.
